Lord Cornwallis passed away on October 5, 1805, at the age of 66, near the village of Gospur in Ghazipur. He was suffering from a fever. After his death, he was buried in the Gorabazar area near the city. A magnificent mausoleum has been built at that location...
The magnificent mausoleum built in Gorabazar, near the city, is a prominent tourist destination in the district known for its remarkable craftsmanship. Foreign tourists also visit to witness this amazing creation. The mausoleum stands tall on twelve huge pillars, each five gaj (yards) wide and forty feet high, with five tiers. It is a sight to behold with its light pink stones free from any blemishes. One can climb the sixteen steps and reach its height. The stones used in the pillars bear blue engravings. The embellishments of flower patterns, the emblem of the British government, a garland of letters on the right side, and the exquisite sculptural marvels enhance its charm. Inscriptions in English and Persian provide information and introduction about Lord Cornwallis' arrival and passing.
This mausoleum represents a fusion of European and Indian Western styles. Built on a large piece of land, this round memorial conveys a message of strength and resilience. The marble floor and the milky white stone of the central pillar are awe-inspiring. Inside the lattice, the upper half of Lord Cornwallis is seen, while on either side, grieving Hindus and Muslims stand. In the center, there is a lotus flower, and on the left side, a delicate artistic garland made of letters, while two soldiers with lowered guns are depicted below.
This famous mausoleum attracts tourists from abroad as well, who come here to witness its magnificent artwork.
